About Our Family - A Forest of Trees
This is the Family record according to handed down as well as documented information.

George Barnes (Monkey George as he was fondly called) as family lore has it was a slave from Africa, is the first know Barnes family member. He traveled to America with his family on a slave ship that didn't survive the trip. He first lived in Virginia and was later sent to Alabama. The Tayloe family purchased him.

"Daddy Louis" Tidwell as he was fondly called was a great storyteller. He is the oldest known family member of the Tidwell/Hill family. He told how books were slipped under the house because "Negroes" were not allowed to have books. He only had 6 yrs of informal education and was a self-taught successful businessman. Rode his bicycle many years despite his age. Often times he would "race" his neighbors on the bicycle. He was honored because of his age by the president, mayor and others. He lived to the age of 103.

Chestley Whitt Sr. is the oldest known family member of the Whitt Family.

Our families overcame many hardships and survived. Their perseverance brought them through some of the darkest periods of their time. They gave to their children so that they would not have to endure their pains. Which is a legacy that we must give to our descendents today, so they will learn how to endure their own hardships with heads held high.

So let's not loose our way or contact with each other!
